Empty That Sink
When your kitchen sink overfloweth with water, that means it is time to unplug. Not digitally, but literally to unplug the kitchen sink.
But how? Here are some options:
Remove standing water: Use a cup or small bowl to bail out as much water as possible from the sink.
Try hot water: Pour a pot of hot (not boiling, especially if you have PVC pipes) water down the drain. Repeat several times if needed
Use baking soda and vinegar: Pour about 1 cup of baking soda into the drain, followed by 1 cup of vinegar. Let the mixture fizz for 15–60 minutes, then flush with hot water.
Plunge the drain: If the clog persists, fill the sink with enough water to cover the bell of a sink plunger. If your sink is double-basin, plug the other side. Plunge vigorously over the drain for 10–12 strokes and check if the clog clears.
Check the garbage disposal: If equipped, make sure the disposal runs freely. If stuck, unplug it and clear jams using tongs or a disposal wrench (never your hand); reset the disposal if needed.
Clean the P-trap: Place a bucket under the sink trap (curved pipe), loosen the fittings, and remove the trap. Clean out any debris or sludge. Reattach and test for leaks and drainage.
Use a plumber's snake: If none of the above works, insert a plumber’s snake or auger into the stub-out pipe behind your P-trap to break up deeper clogs.
And, if none of these work, open up the Yellow Pages, er, I mean Google, and call a plumber.
