Getting Motivated
It is relatively easy to lose your motivation. Whether you get tired tilting at windmills or just tired. It’s hard to stay motivated. And it is a common thing.
So how can you get your motivation mojo back? One way is to start with one tiny action.
When your motivation dissipates, your nervous system reads big tasks as threats, which feeds procrastination and a feeling of overwhelm. Making the next step small makes taking it easier.
Break goals into “ridiculously small” steps (e.g., “work 5 minutes on email” rather than “clear inbox”). Write 15 minutes today, rather than draft George’s Great Fire Truck Adventure.
Treat anything you complete as a win. Even if it is just getting out of bed.
Acknowledge to yourself the win to train your brain to expect success.
Or try a different approach:
List a few activities that bring you pleasure or a feeling of mastery. Then schedule two or three into your day.
Expect to resist this at first. Victory comes from a sense of “I did the action I planned,” not “I felt like doing it.”
Or move beyond tasks to values to make what you want to do meaningful. Motivation is stronger when your actions connect to autonomy, competence, and relationships.
Ask yourself, “Why does this matter to me or to people I care about?” and write a short sentence you can revisit when you get stuck.
Whenever possible, adjust your tasks so they give you more choice and a clear sense of progress or accomplishment.
Or lower the pressure on yourself and your negative self‑talk. Self‑criticism reliably worsens motivation, while self‑compassion improves resilience and follow‑through.
Talk to yourself the way you would to a close friend who is overwhelmed. Be realistic, kind, and specific. Don’t shame yourself.
Notice “all‑or‑nothing” thoughts (“I never get anything done”) and replace them with something more balanced like “Today I can do one important thing.”
Or add structure, rewards, and support to your day. Ask for help or a support group. External support can rally you when your motivation runs thin as the ice in Evergreen right now.
Create a simple structure of external tools like a short to‑do list, time blocks, or a 10–25 minute timer followed by a break. (I use one side of a record to time my concentration on a task.)
Pair tasks with small rewards, reminders posted where you see them, or light accountability with another person so you do not rely on willpower alone.
It’s important to recognize that if your struggle with motivation comes with deep sadness, hopelessness, or thoughts of self‑harm, that can signal depression. If that is the case, seek professional help.
Above all, keep in mind, feeling unmotivated is not unique to you--many, many people experience it--even though you might least expect to. And you are not alone. Not ever. There are definitely those around you that will help without judgement. And motivation usually returns when you shrink the workload, reconnect to what matters, and create small wins that feel doable. The aim is not to feel inspired first, but to act in tiny ways that slowly re‑ignite the will to move forward.
A weekly Gathering Place for YSAs in Springville has been established and we ask that you extend a personal invitation to all graduating seniors and all other YSAs in your ward boundary to attend the Gathering Place.
A Gathering Place is a space where young single adults can participate in uplifting activities and experiences that strengthen connections with one another and with the Lord. For now, it consists of Institute classes and a dinner every Thursday night. The Gathering Place is held at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints on 50 N Main Street in Springville.
