When Frugality Costs More
Being frugal doesn't mean slashing your spending or depriving yourself of things that you enjoy. It means knowing the value of a dollar and making every effort to spend it wisely. But too often, in the pursuit of frugality, we think of only buying cheap, slashing costs, and saving money over all else. Sometimes penny-pinching can backfire and end up costing more in the long run.
Key Ways to Avoid Frugal Mistakes
Prioritize quality over price: Cheap purchases often cost more long-term if they're unreliable or break quickly. Invest in durable, well-made items when possible.
Shop intentionally: Make lists of what is needed or will realistically be used. Avoid buying just because something is on sale or inexpensive.
Set clear goals: Know why you're saving and what you're working toward. Frugal habits have more staying power and make sense when linked to meaningful financial goals.
Budget wisely: Track spending, set limits, and use budgeting methods suited to your lifestyle, like zero-based or envelope systems.
Embrace minimalism: Reducing what you own and focusing on what genuinely adds value or brings joy prevents clutter and unnecessary spending.
Schedule maintenance: Don't skip important routine checkups, repairs, or health care to save money—these typically cost far less than emergency replacements or fixes. An ER visit is outrageous these days. Especially compared to a routine doctor’s visit.
Limit impulse purchases: Use a 24-hour rule: wait before buying non-essential items to curb spontaneous spending. Keep that craved-for item in your Amazon cart for at least five days.
Plan for the long term: Think beyond immediate bargains. Consider the lifetime cost and usefulness of every purchase.
Common Pitfalls to Avoid
Chasing every sale or coupon rather than only purchasing what’s needed.
Sacrificing health or safety to save a few dollars in the short term.
Feeling guilty for reasonable spending and missing out on life experiences because of hyper-focus on saving.
Stockpiling more than can be realistically used just because it's a good deal.

Son of Veronica and Jon Stoltz, Ryan and his fiancé Lillie (pictured here) are planning to be married in 2026. They are both students at BYU. Text or call Veronica with any leads: 952-303-2646.
